It is the listed part of the Mainbernheim cemetery, which has been expanded several times and is still in use today.

history

In 1546, the Mainbernheim cemetery, which was originally located in a fenced area at the old parish church , was moved to the city gates. The cemetery had to be expanded as early as 1618. The Renaissance portal , the arcades resting on wooden posts and the cemetery pulpit date from this time . The next expansion took place in 1866. For the third expansion in 1909, the old cemetery wall was broken through to the northeast and in 1969 the cemetery was expanded to the west. The last expansion took place in 2005.

Renaissance portal

The portal, which was built in the Renaissance style when the cemetery was first expanded, is covered by a basket arch and framed by fluted pilasters . The arch gussets are decorated with winged angel heads on both sides. The keystone of the portal arch is provided with two coat of arms cartouches . The portal is crowned by a volute gable with two inscription panels, which remind of the establishment of the cemetery in 1546 and its first expansion in 1618.

The panel is surrounded by the arms of the bailiff Christian Stein, the Mayor Michael Brüler and the two builders Cunrad Schraud and Kilian Konigsberg. In the upper center are the coats of arms of the Margraves of Brandenburg-Ansbach (with the year 1618) and the city of Mainbernheim (with a bear).

A triangular gable topped by an urn forms the upper end. The inscription is carved into the gable: "Here you lie and sleep in peace - because here too is God's house and a gate of heaven". The inscription below commemorates the renovation in 1821.
