The old town market is a central square in the old town of Brandenburg an der Havel that has existed since the Middle Ages .

History and design

The main trade routes that run through the old town have been running through the old town market since the Middle Ages. At the southwest corner of the rectangular square, for example, Plauer Strasse joins Magdeburg via Plaue . The street Parduin opens at the northern corner, from which the old streets to Rathenow branch off and which itself is extended over the Homeyenbrücke and the Grillendamm to the cathedral of Brandenburg and the old country street to Spandau . The streets flow into each other offset by the width of the square. Medieval buildings have only survived in the eastern area of the square. The dominant building is the old town hall . This outstanding work of secular brick Gothic was built after 1290. The Ordonnanzhaus, which is also Gothic, is located to the right of the town hall with its back facing the market or a street between the town hall and the Ordonnanzhaus that was built in 1912 and facing Schusterstrasse. In front of it is the small, baroque , detached inspector's house . The secretariat and syndicate house is a semi-detached house and a Renaissance building . Both halves of the house date from the 16th century. In the middle of the 19th century, a two-story, later three-story, two-wing urban hospital building was structurally expanded on the rear.

In 1715, after the old town was merged with the new town and the entire municipal administration moved to the new town hall , the old town hall lost its function and the square lost its importance. A barchent manufactory moved in. Besides existed in the market, the main military guard and by the year 1840, a military gallows .

In order to prevent the historically important house from falling into disrepair, the city bought back the old town hall and extensively renovated it. Since then, the market has seen an upturn. A well was built. A large part of the southern and western development of the square also dates from the turn of the century. After the new town hall was destroyed in the Second World War , the Roland was moved to the old town market in front of the town hall there. In the GDR , the town hall was used again as a meeting room, but the city's administration was housed elsewhere, in the old prison in front of the old town.

After the political change in 1989/90, many buildings were renovated and vacant lots were closed. A new hotel was built on the northwest side. After the town hall and the Ordonnanzhaus had been extensively restored and rebuilt, this complex was again the actual town hall and the seat of the mayor or the mayor. A large part of the development of the square is designated as a monument, the old town in its entirety as a ground monument. A summer linden tree on the left in front of the town hall has been a natural monument since 1987 . There is a fountain in the center of the square .
