Left partial building the syndicate house, right the secretariat house

The secretariat and syndicate house is a historical and eye-catching twin house in the city of Brandenburg an der Havel . The building halves were built in the 16th century. The double building is designated as a monument .

history

The secretariat and syndicate house or the partial buildings were built in the formerly independent old town of Brandenburg on the old town market in the vicinity of the old town hall . Between 1513 and 1514 the syndicate house, the left part of the house when viewed from the market square, was built. As the name suggests, the Syndikatshaus was the residence and place of work of the Syndikus , the authorized representative for legal transactions in the old town. The old town had its own independent jurisdiction and the court arbor was also located on the old town market . About fifty years after the syndicate house, around 1565, the secretariat house was built to the southwest. This part of the building stands out due to a Renaissance gable.

In 1715 the (partially) independent old town was merged with the new town of Brandenburg to form the city of Brandenburg an der Havel. Since the old town hall lost its function with the town association, the neighboring syndicate house was no longer used by the municipality. In 1724 a baroque reconstruction took place , in the course of which both parts of the building were structurally combined. The secretariat and syndicate house was a warehouse for yarns , goods and hand tools from 1753 to 1803 . At that time, a barchents' manufacture was housed in the old town hall . In the 19th century, an elementary school for girls was housed from 1825 and a community school for boys from 1867.

Two-wing hospital building attached to the rear

In 1841/42 a new two-storey hospital building was built behind the syndicate house and in 1843 a new three-storey hospital building was opened in 1855 . In 1881 the front building was also taken over by the city hospital and integrated into it. The original Brandenburger Fritze Bollmann died in the hospital on the Altstädtischer Markt on May 7, 1901. Just two months later, the hospital moved into the newly built municipal clinic on Hochstrasse and from the premises on the Altstädtischer Markt. Instead, the municipal welfare office moved into the vacant building. From 1975 the city archive was housed. An extensive renovation and restoration of the building took place by 2002 . The Fouqué library , the municipal library , then moved into the secretariat and syndicate house and the adjoining former hospital building.

Building

The secretariat and syndicate house consists of two individual buildings that were later structurally combined. The syndicate building on the left is a simple two-story plastered building with rectangular windows and a hipped roof covered with beaver tails . On the free, northeast-facing side wall, part of the framework, which is otherwise under the plaster, is exposed. A protruding gable ear is striking .

The right Secretariat House has an impressive Renaissance gable. This tail gable is asymmetrical , as the eaves towards the syndicate house are one storey higher than the free, south-western side. This results in a three-story partial building. This is where the portal is located . This is simply designed and arched in the basket . In the Renaissance gable , cornices and pilaster strips stand out as decorative elements. During the last renovation, both halves of the house were painted in different colors.
