Aluminum diacetate is an aluminum salt of acetic acid and is one of the aluminum acetates .

Extraction and presentation

The aluminum diacetate can be prepared directly by reacting sodium aluminate with acetic acid .

use

The diacetate is used in medicine because of its antiseptic , astringent and cooling effect in the treatment of insect bites, burns without open wounds, bruises and sprains, but never on open wounds. It is often referred to as acetic clay and sold as a gel-like substance in tubes or cans. Acetic clay often contains tartaric acid as a stabilizing agent. Aluminum diacetate has been on the World Health Organization's Essential Medicines List since 1977 .

Aluminum diacetate is also used to impregnate cotton or mixed fabrics, e.g. B. in group or large tents, use. It is also used as a mordant in textile dyeing.

Acetic clay is occasionally used to improve the adhesion of plaster mortars to surfaces with sintered skin or those exposed to salt. A 1% solution with a pH of around 4 is typically used.

Trade names

In Germany, aluminum diacetate is available in combination with Algeldrat under the name Lenicet.
