Previous model Alvis Silver Eagle

The Alvis Silver Crest was a passenger car that Alvis manufactured from 1936 to 1940 as the successor to the Silver Eagle model . At the same time, however, it also moved closer to the luxury model Crested Eagle . In terms of character, the Silver Crest was a large, heavy, touring car designed for comfort.

description

The new model name combined elements of the name of the Silver Eagle series (1930 to 1931 and 1934 to 1936) with those of the higher-positioned Crested Eagle series (1933 to 1934 and 1937 to 1939). The new model name took account that the Silvercrest not the traditional solid front axle with semi-elliptical longitudinal leaf springs of Silver Eagle took over, but the independent front suspension with single transverse leaf spring got the Alvis in 1933 with the models Speed 20 SB and Crested Eagle TD and TE introduced would have. The Silver Crest also did not use the narrower chassis of the Silver Eagle , but a shorter version of the Crested Eagle . The external distinguishing feature of the Silver Crest are its 16-inch wheels, which were unusually wide for the time, but small, whereas the Silver Eagle had tall, narrow 20-inch wheels and the Crested Eagle wide 19-inch wheels.

The TF model first appeared in 1936 . It was equipped with the six-cylinder in - line engine with overhead valves of the Silver Eagle SG , which from 2362 cm³ displacement (bore × stroke = 67.5 mm × 110 mm) an output of now 68 bhp (50 kW) at only 3800 rpm scooped up. The mixture was further processed by three SU carburetors. The drive was carried out as usual via a rigid rear axle guided by two semi-elliptical longitudinal leaf springs.

The wheelbase of the car had grown to 3,048 mm and reached the threshold of 10 feet, which is striking in the Anglo-Saxon region. The track width increased to 1422 mm and thus corresponded to the large six-cylinder models Crested Eagle , Speed 20 , Speed 25 and 4.3 liter .

The mostly elegant limousine and convertible bodies of the Silver Crest reached a length of 4699 mm and a width of 1778 mm on this chassis. Their width corresponded to that of the luxury model Crested Eagle , their overall length was between the models Crested Eagle TA and TJ (with short wheelbase) and the variants TB and TK (with long wheelbase). The specified maximum speed is 114.5 km / h.

In 1937 the TF was given the TH model . With otherwise the same design, it had an engine with a displacement of 2762 cm³ (bore × stroke = 73 mm × 110 mm), which made 95 bhp (70 kW) at 4000 rpm. The engine was a more powerful further development of that of the Speed 20 SC and SD, offered and now discontinued in 1935 and 1936 . This enabled the vehicle to reach a top speed of 132 km / h.

In 1940 the series was discontinued without replacement due to the war .
