Alvise Contarini (born October 24, 1601 in Venice ; † January 14, 1684 there ) was the 106th Doge of Venice . He ruled from 1676 to 1684.

family

The Contarini family provided the first doge in 1042, which was followed by seven more. Alvise Contarini, nephew of the Doge Francesco Contarini , was the last of the Contarini Doges.

Life

Alvise was born the third son of Niccolò Contarini and Elena Michiel. He wasn't married.

Before his election as Doge, he represented the Serenissima as ambassador to France , Spain , Holland and to the Curia in Rome . As savio , he supported the party in the grand council, which pleaded for a continuation of the war with the Turks. He received the title of cavaliere from the French king . Alvise, like many of the Doges, was procurator before his election .

The Doge's Office

During his quiet reign there was judicial reform in Venice. There was also a new influx of relics brought to Venice from Turkish-occupied Crete .

In terms of foreign policy, the existence of Venice was threatening, as the Turks, who had invaded the Habsburg Empire since 1682 , gradually conquered the entire Balkans and finally stood before Vienna , where they were defeated in 1683 under the intervention of Jan Sobieski . The great council was now considering joining the league against the Turks.

Tomb

He was buried in the Contarini family chapel in San Francesco della Vigna , where a bust commemorates him.
