Bonnet went to school in Belley . He then moved to Lyon, where he obtained his Bachelor of Arts (BA) ( Baccalauréat en arts ) in 1825 and his Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) ( Baccalauréat en sciences ) a year later . Then he turned to the study of medicine in Paris. On August 18, 1832, he was the subject of Recherches sur quelques points de physiology et de pathology, means of que la surdité, les luxation, le mouvement of cotes, le siège of rhumatismes doctorate . In May 1833 he became a surgeon at the Hôtel-Dieu de Lyon , the largest hospital in Lyon. On January 1, 1838, Bonnet became a medical officer and professor of surgery. In 1843 he finished his military service and remained a professor in Lyon. In 1858 he was elected a corresponding member of the Académie des sciences .

Bonnet is mainly concerned with joint stiffening (ankyloses). He was the first surgeon to systematically examine tears of the collateral ligaments in cadavers, which he published in 1845 under the title "Traité des maladies des articulations". In Germany, the 1300 page monograph was published in 1851 under the title On the treatment of joint diseases . With his work, Bonnet laid the foundation for modern knee surgery.

In his book Traité de thérapeutique des maladies articulaires , published in 1853, Bonnet wrote that immobilizing the affected knee for too long had a negative effect on healing. He developed the first devices for active movement against the cartilage-damaging effects of immobilization . In his remarks on the treatment of acute injuries, he was way ahead of the times. For example, Bonnet suggested cold packs for initial treatment of the injury and gentle exercise soon. In the same book, Bonnet describes an orthosis for the first time . This had two hinges for patients with an anterior cruciate ligament tear.

In 1845 Bonnet invented the wire bandage. The enucleation of the eyeball ( enucleatio bulbi ) also goes back to Bonnet. The entire eye socket was previously cleared.
