The Amagiri ( Japanese天 霧) was a Fubuki- class destroyer of the Imperial Japanese Navy . She was laid down on November 28, 1928 at the Ishikawajima shipyard in Tokyo . She was launched on February 28, 1930, and entered service on November 10, 1930.

At first she mainly took part in combat exercises. In 1934, she and other Japanese ships were slightly damaged in a storm in the Korea Strait . The destroyer took part in the Second Sino-Japanese War and was assigned to the 20th Destroyer Division.

During the Second World War , the ship took part in the successful Japanese landing in Singora on the Malay Peninsula in December 1941 .

In January 1942 she attacked two British destroyers off Malaya , where she was able to sink the HMS Thanet . In February she supported the Japanese landing on Java. In April, she was assigned to the southern group of support forces in Operation C , attacks on Allied shipping along the east coast of India. On April 6, 1942, the Amagiri, together with the heavy cruisers Mikuma and Mogami, sank three Allied merchant ships off the Indian coast. Then she was assigned to the main fleet, which was defeated by the Americans under Admiral Yamamoto Isoroku in the Battle of Midway . In August she ran to the Solomon Islands to combat the American landing on Guadalcanal . She was very active in the Battle of Guadalcanal , in the skirmishes in the central Solomon Islands and also took part in the Battle of the Kula Gulf .

On August 2, 1943, when she was bringing reinforcement troops to Port Vila , she rammed and sank the PT-speedboat PT-109 and fought several other speedboats in the Blackett Strait south of Kolombangara . As a result, she achieved a certain fame, as the commander of PT-109 was the then lieutenant and later President John F. Kennedy , who was able to save himself with other comrades by swimming for miles on an island.

On the night of November 24th to 25th, 1943, she was on her way again to bring reinforcement troops to Bougainville . In the ensuing battle of Cape St. George they were able to escape the American destruction.

On April 23, 1944, she ran into a mine off Borneo and sank.

The exact location of the Amagiri wreck was unknown for a very long time, until it was discovered and explored by a diving team on October 10, 2003 after a long search.
