features

Amatitlania kanna is very similar to the zebra cichlid ( Amatitlania nigrofasciata ) known from aquaristics , but with a higher back. Its under-eye stripe is clear, as is a stripe from the eye to the mouth and the horizontal stripes on the sides of the body. These are a little wider in the middle and towards the top. The head band has a gap at the level of the sideline. The posterior sections of the dorsal and anal fin are not spotted. The breast is olive-colored, the base of the pectoral fin is whitish. The often saddle-shaped tail spot is located entirely on the fin. Compared to A. nigrofasciata , Amatitlania kanna has fewer scales around the caudal peduncle.

In the internal anatomy, there is a clear difference in the color of the peritoneum . In Amatitlania kanna it is only pigmented on the back ( dorso - lateral ), in A. nigrofasciata it is completely dark. The os quadratum ("square leg") is wider than it is long. The gill rakes on the first gill arch are often split in two.
