AGK Menon , full name Ambat Gopalan Kutty Menon (born April 19, 1921 ; died April 11, 2002 ), was an Indian ichthyologist and university professor.

Career

AGK Menon grew up in Coonoor in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu , where his father worked as a doctor at the Pasteur Institute , and attended British high school in Chittoor , Andhra Pradesh . He then studied zoology at Madura College , one of the oldest British-Indian universities in Madurai , Tamil Nadu. This was followed by postgraduate studies at Presidency College of the University of Madras in Chennai , which he in 1952 with a doctorate for Ph.D. graduated from Sundar Lal Hora . A few years later he received the title of Doctor of Science . In 1953 Menon married a granddaughter of the last maharajah of the princely state of Cochin .

Guided by Sundar Lal Hora, Menon dealt intensively during his studies and in the years afterwards with the Satpura hypothesis developed by Hora, according to which the central Indian Satpura mountains for the fauna of the Malay peninsula as a bridge for the expansion to the Indian subcontinent and into the Western Ghats served. In support of the hypothesis, Hora and Menon cited similarities such as the development of organs for sucking into rocks in high currents, which have now been recognized as examples of convergent evolution .

In his later research Menon dealt with a number of higher taxa of the fish, without choosing marine fish or freshwater fish like many of his colleagues. During his more than fifty years of research, Menon published more than 100 scientific publications , many of them monographs . In addition to revisions of a number of taxa, Menon wrote the first descriptions of 43 fish species. After working for decades as a professor at the University of Madras and as an employee of the affiliated southern regional center of the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) in Chennai, he retired in 1978 as deputy head of the station.

After his retirement, Menon became Associate Professor at the Institute for Marine Science at the University of Dar es Salaam . After three years he returned to Madras to continue his research at ZSI as an emeritus scientist . In these later years he published the two volumes on the Homalopteridae (largely identical to the flat loaches ) and the Cobitidae in the Fauna of India . His collaboration with the IUCN , of which he was a member of the Fish Specialist Group , led to the publication of a species index of Indian freshwater fish in 1999. A monograph on the endangered fish of India only appeared after Menon's death; he was unable to complete an extensive revision of the carp fish genus Puntius . Menon was the founding president of the Indian Society of Ichthyologists . A number of species of fish were named after him.
