The Ambrose Shea was a ferry that entered service in 1968 for Transport Canada . It was used by various operators on the route from North Sydney to Argentia and Channel-Port aux Basques until 1989 and was sold to Greece as Queen Vergina in 1991 . Technical problems led to the decommissioning of the ship in 1997, which went to Aliağa , Turkey, to be scrapped in 2000 after three years of layover .

history

The Ambrose Shea was built under the hull number 324 in the Vickers Shipyard in Sorel-Tracy and was launched on April 16, 1966. A fire that broke out on board on December 12, 1966 delayed the delivery to Transport Canada, which finally took place in May 1968. The ship stationed in North Sydney sailed the line to Argentia in the summer months and to Channel-Port aux Basques in the winter months. It was named after the Canadian politician Ambrose Shea (1815-1905).

In the following years, Ambrose Shea changed operators several times. Since 1973 she has belonged to the Canadian National Railway , since 1986 she has been managed by Marine Atlantic, which belongs to Transport Canada . On November 28, 1989 the ship was decommissioned after 21 years of service and offered for sale.

A new owner was found in December 1989 with the Bahamas- based Rederi Ab Sea Link, who had the ship, renamed Ambrose , converted in Gdynia . A planned commissioning under the name Europa Link was discarded and the ferry was therefore launched .

After the Ambrose passed into the possession of the Greek Strintzis Line in March 1991 , it was sold in the same year as Queen Vergina to the Stability Lines based in Malta , which used it from 1992 between Piraeus , Rhodes and Haifa . In 1993 the ship was briefly chartered by Topas Maritime Lines on the route from Ancona to Çeşme . In 1994 the Ayios Efthimios Navgation Company, also based in Malta, bought the Queen Vergina , which was operated from 1996 by the newly founded shipping company Vergina Ferries.

In 1997 the ship suffered engine damage during a crossing and had to be towed to Corfu , where the passengers disembarked. Then the Queen Vergina was retired and hung up in Eleusis . After three years of berthing, the ship arrived on June 22, 2000 under the shortened name of Erg for demolition in Aliağa, Turkey.
