The Ameisenberg is a flat conical mountain in the northern Zittau Mountains with 575 m above sea level. The anthill is completely forested. Numerous sandstone formations, especially on the east side and the summit area, such as Bastei, Wilde Mauer and Robertfelsen, characterize the mountain.

Location and surroundings

The ant hill rises north above the village of Oybin on the southwestern edge of the Olbersdorf basin above the place of the same name . On the steeply sloping east side there is a deep valley cut to the potter . The railway line of the Zittau narrow-gauge railway to Oybin and also the road from Olbersdorf to Oybin run here. The “Teufelsmühle” stop is located in the valley floor and offers a starting point for climbing the mountain. The old trade route "Alte Leipaer Straße" runs along the west side of the mountain. On this, on the north-west side of the mountain, is the source of the "Hunger Well" with the "bread stone", a representation of a bread that is reminiscent of a local legend.

The Lusatian Fault , which separates the granodiorite of Lusatia from the sandstones of Bohemia, runs as the most important geological fault zone on the northern slope of the mountain . Here the sandstone was thermally hardened in the Tertiary by rising magma.

Tell the origin of the name

At the foot of the anthill a wild and raw giant race is said to have lived, which lived on hunting and robbery and tyrannized the population.

A pious hermit is said to have lived in the valley between Ameisenberg and Töpfer. This threatened the giants, if they don't change their way of life, Heaven will punish them. The giants laughed at him and made it even harder. This angered the pious hermit and he transformed the whole race of the giants into ants at Pentecost, who from then on lived on the slopes of the ant hill.

Paths to the summit

Possible starting points for the ascent to the summit are hiking trails that lead from Oybin and Olbersdorf to the summit. There is a refuge near the summit.

Tourism and sports

The annual "Zittauer Gebirgslauf und Wandertreff" runs over the Ameisenberg

The ant hill is also a climbing area. The Robertfelsen on the eastern flank of the mountain is the most famous and easy-to-climb climbing peak.
Popular hiking destinations are the "Katzenkerbe" and the "Bastei".

Protected area

The Ameisenberg is temporarily closed to hikers and climbers (January to August) due to a designation as a nest protection zone .
