action
Andrew "Drew" Collins loses his parents in a plane crash. The boy is taken in as a baby by a Japanese sword master and initiated into the secrets of the Japanese samurai . The master treats the boy like his own son Kenjiro, who, however, is jealous of Andrew. Andrew attains Samurai Honor, while the quick-tempered Kenjiro joins the Yakuza underground organization . Much to Kenjiro's annoyance, Andrew inherits the family sword. When the master dies, Andrew goes to America, where he works as a journalist. One night the katana given to him is stolen and Andrew travels with a photographer to Turkey, where he wants to investigate some ritual murders in the style of the yakuza.
During his investigation, he comes across an illegal arena where sword fights are fought to the death. Kenjiro, his step-brother, is the undefeated champion so far. Andrew is captured. The reporter, who was also taken hostage, puts him under pressure and has to fight in the arena. In the end, he faces Kenjiro, and the two fight to the death. Andrew tries to incapacitate his stepbrother, but the latter attacks him in a weakened state. Andrew is forced to kill him and leaves the arena victorious.
background
American Samurai is a typical representative of the 1980s / 1990s action B-movies and is extremely brutal in the uncut version. The German video version was therefore only available in an abridged version. An official German release on DVD has not yet taken place, but unabridged bootleg DVDs are in circulation.
The Filipino-US-American production Live by the Fist has nothing to do with this film, but has only been renamed American Samurai 2 by the German distributor .
criticism
"American Samurai" is a violent action film with battered faces and broken bones en masse. The tournament fights - in which the toughest warriors in the world collide again - are attractive, but offer nothing really new apart from the sometimes bitter slaughterhouse. Fans of blood-soaked B-stripes should still get their money's worth. But caution is advised, as the Federal Inspectorate was as uncompromising in censoring the film as the protagonists in eliminating their opposition. "
