American Warships is a low budget - science fiction film from The Asylum from 2012. The film is a Mockbuster to Peter Berg's Battleship .

action

An unknown group of alien warships wrecked a South Korean island and several US destroyers and aircraft carriers . The attackers use an EMP weapon, with the help of which they switch off all modern microelectronics on ships and aircraft. The battleship USS Iowa , which has already been partially converted into a museum and is currently on its last crossing to San Pedro, is also hit by this weapon. All electronic devices also fail , only the historical technology based on radio tubes is not destroyed by the EMP. The battleship can therefore communicate with headquarters using an old shortwave transceiver . When the aliens attack a North Korean base, the situation escalates. The POTUS sends several Northrop B-2 bombers to prevent a nuclear first strike on the opposing side. Some of them are also being destroyed by the aliens and a third world war is looming . The crew of the USS Iowa succeeds in destroying the alien warships and bringing an alien on deck with the help of historical ammunition that has already been stored. They are radioactive and wanted mankind to self-extinguish with the help of their own nuclear weapons in order to subsequently take over the planet.

background

The film was shot mainly on the battleship USS North Carolina within 2 weeks and has over 250 VFX shots. Due to a class action lawsuit by Universal Studios , The Asylum had to rename the film from American Battleship to American Warships .

The plot of the high-quality electronics incapacitated at the beginning of the attack was used in a very similar way at the beginning of the television series Battlestar Galactica . Here, too, the action is carried by a battleship (battle star), which has already been largely converted into a museum ship.

The film called American Warships 2 (2014) in German-speaking countries is originally called Bermuda Tentacles and was also produced by The Asylum.

criticism

“Hollywood is launching a 'battleship' and The Asylum's answer is not long in coming. After all, Mario van Peebles and the former 'Rocky' main opponent Carl Weathers have the honor of recognizing the one as a smart captain on the bridge and the latter as a general in the Pentagon. The entertaining story isn't any more silly than that of the blockbuster, and the quality of the effects is completely sufficient for our purposes. "
