The American sandwich tern ( Thalasseus acuflavides , Syn. Thalasseus acuflavidus; Thalasseus sandvicensis acuflavidus ) is a species of bird in the family of the tern (Sternidae).
Until recently, it was considered a subspecies (ssp.) Of the sandwich tern , according to Avibase, IUCN Redlist and Handbook of the Birds of the World
In 2011 the British Ornithologists' Union recommended splitting off as a separate species .
In 2015, the Association of European Rarities Committees recommended a spin-off.
This separation is already taken into account in the IOC World Bird List of the International Ornithological Union .
The American sandwich tern is more closely related to the ornamental tern .
It occurs on the Caribbean islands and along coasts of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans in North and South America .
Their range includes coastal areas.

The bird is 36–46 cm tall and weighs 175–202 g.
The American sandwich tern is very similar to the sandwich tern , differs in its longer and thinner beak with a curved upper edge of its beak ( culmen) , the apex and forehead are bright white, not gray. The eye ring is wider at the back and there are small hooks on the outer hand wings.
Geographic variation
The following subspecies are recognized:
- T. a. acuflavidu ( Cabot , 1847), nominate form - eastern North America to southern Caribbean , winters in Peru and Uruguay
- T. a. eurygnathu ( Saunders , 1876) - Island off Venezuela and Guyanas , north and east of South America

The diet consists of fish .
