Ami Ajalon ( Hebrew עמי אילון; * June 27, 1945 in Tiberias , Palestine ) is an Israeli politician, peace activist and member of the Knesset for the Avoda Labor Party . On June 12, 2007 he was defeated in a runoff election by Ehud Barak for the chairmanship of the Israeli Labor Party. Ajalon was admiral and commander in chief of the Israeli navy and from February 1996 to May 2000 head of the Israeli domestic secret service Shin Bet (שב).

Life

Ajalon, descendant of a Hungarian Zionist pioneer family, was born near Tiberias in 1945. In 1963, Ajalon volunteered in the Israeli Navy , where he began a nearly 32-year career as a member of the elite Shayetet 13 unit . In 1969, his unit, together with Sajeret Matkal , was awarded the highest military distinction as part of Operation Butmus , the attack on the fortified so-called "Green Island" in Egypt . He himself was later promoted several times and was finally appointed commander of Shayetet 13 in 1979. In this role he led various military operations, for whose services he was awarded other medals.

Ajalon graduated in 1980 with a degree in social sciences from Bar-Ilan University with a Bachelor of Arts and in 1992 a degree in management from Harvard University with a Master of Public Administration . In 1992 he was promoted to admiral and appointed commander in chief of the Israeli Navy, a position he held until his retirement in 1996. After the murder of the Israeli Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin , Ajalon took over the chief post of the Israeli domestic secret service Shin Bet from 1996 to 2002 .

On June 25, 2003, Ajalon started the peace initiative “Peoples' Campaign for Peace and Democracy” (also “Peoples Voice”) together with the Palestinian professor at the Al-Quds University of East Jerusalem, Sari Nusseibeh . The aim of this movement is to mobilize the public for the so - called two - state solution with the Palestinians, without the right of return for Palestinian refugees, but with a separate state in the Gaza Strip and in the West Bank with East Jerusalem as the capital.

In 2006 Ayalon was elected to the Knesset, the Israeli parliament, as a member of the Avoda. After 14 months of parliamentary experience, he ran for chairmanship of the Israeli Labor Party in June 2007, but lost on June 12, 2007 in a runoff election against Ehud Barak . In September of the same year he was appointed Minister without Portfolio.

documentary

Ajalon is one of the interviewees in the Israeli documentary Kill First ( The Gatekeepers ) by director Dror Moreh . The film from 2012 deals with the work of the Shin Bet and shows, in addition to documentary material, interviews with the six heads of the secret service who were still alive in 2012. The film was released in Israeli cinemas in early 2013 and was broadcast in March 2013 by both the Franco-German television station arte and ARD .
