Life

Amico Aspertini is the best known representative of a Bolognese family of artists. Both the father, Giovanni Antonio Aspertini , and two of his brothers, Leonello and Guido worked as painters. He learned his trade from his father before he later worked as an assistant in the workshops of Ercole de Roberti , Lorenzo Costa and Francesco Francia and continued his education there. At the same time, Nordic painting, especially that of German and old Dutch artists, left a lasting impression on him. During what was probably an early trip to Florence , he probably met Filippino Lippi , whose work had some influence on Amico's early work. Between 1496 and 1503 he worked in Rome . Stays in Lucca , Mantua and Siena are also documented. From 1527 to 1528 and from 1531 to 1534 he stayed in Rome again.

Aspertini was influenced by ancient artists early on. Later he was inspired by the art of Michelangelo . Amico Aspertini's works are very imaginative and combine the most varied of influences into a very unique style. He took in the influences of the incipient mannerism with enthusiasm . He was soon seen as a painter who did not adhere to artistic standards and who went his own way. As a result, his works were in great demand and he was given numerous commissions. In addition to his painting, his sculptural works were also highly valued, so that it can be assumed that he did not only pursue sculpture out of a hobby.
