Amico Ricci Petrocchini or Petruccini or Petruchini (* 1794 in Macerata , † 1862 in Modena ) was an Italian art historian .

biography

The Marchese Amico Ricci from Macerata , a knight of the Mauritius Order , distinguished himself as a literary scholar and influential personality. He was a member of the Accademia dei Catenati of Macerata, for which he wrote various "dissertations", curator of the Biblioteca Comunale Mozzi Borgetti of Macerata (to which he would later leave his own private library and manuscripts of his works with all working materials), teacher at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna and official of the papal government. In the years 1824-1825 he held the position of gonfaloniere of the city and in this capacity convinced Francesco Puccinotti , who would later become one of the most famous forensic doctors in Italy, to apply for a chair in pathology , symptomatology and general therapy .

His main work, the Memorie storiche delle arti e degli artisti della Marca di Ancona , dates from 1834 and was the first careful and systematic treatise on the art history of the Marches . In addition to several essays on art history, he also composed cantatas for viola (1862).

As a descendant of a noble family from Macerata, his ancestors included the Jesuit missionary and sinologist Matteo Ricci , from whom he owned numerous letters which he made available to the historian and patriot Giuseppe La Farina during his stay in Bologna in 1843. The work La China, considerata nella sua storia emerged from this study . His descendants include his nephew Matteo Ricci Petrocchini , son of his brother Domenico and husband of Alessandrina, daughter of Massimo d'Azeglio : he was a writer, member of the Accademia della Crusca and senator of the Kingdom of Italy from 1890 to 1896.

The Memorie storiche delle arti e degli artisti della Marca di Ancona

In the Memorie storiche delle arti e degli artisti della Marca di Ancona , which are dedicated to his mother Maria Vendramin, Amico Ricci has meticulously reconstructed the life of the artists of the Marche from the Middle Ages to his time and described the works. In this way, thanks to his long and careful historiographical research and the exchange and critical examination of other intellectuals of the time such as Count Leopoldo Cicognara or Pietro Selvatico, he carried out the first systematic study of the art history of this region. In his work he was not only interested in architecture, sculpture and painting, but also in the so-called small arts such as goldsmith or ceramics and showed a new interest in artists of the early 15th century (a prime example is Gentile da Fabriano , the Ricci had already devoted an article in 1829) and thus approached the theories of purism. In his chronicles we learn, among other things, news about the aforementioned Gentile da Fabriano, the Ticino-born architect Pietro Maggi and Prince Alessandro Maggiori, a well-known collector of his contemporary art, who welcomed him as a great friend and teacher and the first creator of an art history of the Marche region.

Amico Ricci worked for a long time on the preparation of a second edition of the Memorie, which, however, was never printed, despite this intention, as a copy of the first edition with handwritten notes in the Ricci collection of the Mozzi Borgetti City Library (Ms 240-240 bis) attests to .
