history

The academy was founded on July 2nd, 1574 and has existed without interruption to this day. It takes its name from the "golden chain that runs from heaven to earth" and is in the coat of arms . The academy was founded for the "study of aesthetic literature, the arts" and for "thinking about scientific matters".

It was founded by Girolamo Zoppio - professor of poetics, rhetoric and moral philosophy at the University of Macerata , known for his studies on Dante and Petrarch . Members include personalities such as Giovanni Mario Crescimbeni from Macerata, founder and general administrator of the Accademia dell'Arcadia , Torquato Tasso , Don Carlo Hercolani (patrician from Macerata ), Terenzio Mamiani , Niccolò Tommaseo , Antonio Rosmini , Massimo D'Azeglio and, finally, Lino Liviabella , Maria Montessori , Vincenzo Cardarelli , Enrico Medi and Silvio Zavatti.

Due to the political and military changes in the first half of the 20th century, the academy ceased its activities for a short time and resumed it in the 1950s thanks to the efforts of Ferdinando Lori, Mario Moretti and Dante Cecchi.

Coat of arms and motto

When the founders chose the name Catenati for the academics, they were inspired by the motto "Hinc a te nati" (You were here). In contrast, the coat of arms, consisting of a gold chain that falls from heaven to earth, comes from a section from Book VIII of the Iliad , which describes "the love and friendship of heavenly and earthly things and the stages of ascent and descent from heaven and into heaven ". The gold, for its part, must have signified that "only good things descend from heaven to earth, and so there is no other way to ascend to heaven than good, virtue and toil".

As a result, other principles were also adopted, such as PAIAPOI EHOMENOI (Everywhere) and KATAIN ATH (against errors).

The artists' hangout quickly gained fame and authority by playing an important cultural role in the brands that celebrated poetry and science. Not only that, he also wanted to portray tragedies and comedies, as well as musical works.

Torquato Tasso himself wanted to introduce The Liberated Jerusalem to the Catenai in 1587 .

Statutes of the Accademia

Over time, the Macerata artists' meeting place was regulated by the founding laws of 1779 and the novellas of 1829, 1868, 1963 and 2010.

Article 1 states: "Its purpose is to bring together the greatest and most outstanding scholars of literature, science and the arts and to disseminate their work. This goal is achieved through public initiatives and support for the dissemination of literary, scientific and artistic works" .

The second article then says: "The academics are divided into honorary and ordinary. Volunteers are those who have made particular contributions to the academy or who have achieved fame and notoriety in literature, science and art. Ordinary academics are selected from those who have distinguished themselves in particular in the literary, scientific and artistic culture and activity and who meet the requirements of Art. 4. The vitality and activity of the Academy is based on the ordinary academics. Honorary members who are among those listed in Art. 4 can be appointed to full members who no longer belong to the previous category ".

Equally important is Article 3, which states that "honorary and full members are divided into three classes:

  1. Humanistic, moral, legal, economic and social subjects;
  2. Scientific and technological subjects;
  3. Artistic fields ".

In this context, Article 4 states: "Honorary academics are appointed without restriction of nationality. Ordinary academics must either be long-born in the city of Macerata and its province, or they must be born in the municipalities that are already part of the province of Marca d'Ancona, whose capital was Macerata: Amandola , Arcevia (formerly Rocca Contrada), Castelfidardo , Corinaldo , Filottrano , Monte Giorgio , Monte Granaro , Monte Marciano , Monte San Pietrangeli , Ostra (formerly Monte Alboddo), Ostra Vetere (formerly Monte Novo), Sant'Elpidio , Serra de 'Conti , Serra San Quirico e Staffolo "

Finally, the organs of the Academy are listed in Art. 5: "the General Assembly, which is composed of all honorary and full members; the Academic Council elected by the General Assembly consists of seven members; it elects the chairperson, the deputy, the Treasurer, secretary and an auditor for each class. The auditors, consisting of three persons with proven competence, are elected by the assembly and have the task of controlling the economic and financial management of the association and checking that it corresponds to the stated social purposes . "

Chair of the Academy

The first chairman of the academy, at the head of the circle, was the founder Gerolamo Zoppio. After Dante Cecchi, a woman was elected for the first time in the history of the academy in 2011: Angiola Maria Napolioni, former director of the Macerata State Library, who in turn has appointed Dante Cecchi as retired director.

The Academic Council

The most important body for the work of the Academy is the Academic Council, which from April 16, 2019 will include the Board of Directors Angiola Maria Napolioni, Allì Caracciolo, Fabio Sileoni, Luigi Ricci, Renato Lapponi, Anna Maria Tamburri and Gianfranco Pasquali.

  2. The Arcadia formed spontaneously to a free association of scholars and writers. With the death of Christine of Sweden (1689), the Accademia Reale, which she founded, had dissolved, but a large part of its members continued to gather in the suburban gardens to recite verses. On October 5, 1690, the Accademia dell'Arcadia was founded. The undisputed leader among the 14 founders was the canon Giovanni Mario Crescimbeni , who also held the office of administrator general for the first 38 years, while the late Queen of Sweden carried the title of "Basilissa".
