Type : Ampedus quadrisignatus
Scientific name
Ampedus quadrisignatus
( Gyllenhal , 1817)

Ampedus quadrisignatus is a beetle from the family of click beetles (Elateridae) and the subfamily of Ampedinae . The species name quadrisignatus comes from Latin and means "drawn square".

features

The beetles reach a length of 10 to 14 millimeters. The body is black, while the elytra are straw yellow to reddish yellow. The wing covers each have two distinct black points in the front area and are black in the lower area. Similar yellow click beetles are Ampedus nigroflavus , which, however, have no dots on the wing-coverts, and above all Ampedus elegantulus , which only has one point on the anterior wing-coverts.

distribution

Ampedus quadrisignatus occurs in Central Europe , from France to Ukraine .

Ampedus quadrisignatus is stenotopic , which means that it is only distributed in a few, clearly defined biotopes . The wireworm larvae develop in the wood detritus of rot- rotten wood from deciduous trees. In France, these are mainly oaks , where the species occurs together with larvae of Schröter of the genus Aesalus ( Kurzschröter ) and Balkenschrötern .

In Hungary , the larvae are found in common bird cherry , beech , hornbeam and occasionally oak. They always occur together with the rare black-brown short shredder , on which the larvae feed, among other things. In other places this can be chestnuts , where the species occurs together with the larvae of the Schröter genus Ceruchus .

Preference is always given to old trees with a large trunk circumference in a dark, shady location. Laibner observed that most of the flying beetles were females.

The larvae pupate in autumn, but the imago remains in the rot-rotten wood over the winter and does not appear outdoors until April.

Danger

The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) assesses the stock as endangered . In Hungary, the species is protected in Slovakia as threatened with extinction ( "critically endangered") classified. In Germany the species is considered extinct.

On the one hand, the stock is endangered by foragers, but also by the removal of dead wood from forests and the dependence on certain prey species, whose populations are becoming weaker.
