Thung Saliam District ( Thai : อำเภอ ทุ่งเสลี่ยม ) is a district ( Amphoe - administrative district) of the province of Sukhothai . Sukhothai Province is located in the northern region of Thailand . "Thung" means "field" in the German translation, while "Saliam" refers to a certain type of tree. In a figurative sense, the place could be translated as "Birkenfeld".

Neighboring counties (clockwise from the north): the Amphoe Si Satchanalai , Sawankhalok , Si Samrong and Ban Dan Lan Hoi of Sukhothai Province, and Thoen of Lampang Province .

history

Thung Saliam was set up as a subdistrict ( King Amphoe ) in 1957 by separating the two tambon Thung Saliam and Klang Dong from the Sawankhalok district . Two years later, Thung Saliam received full Amphoe status.

Attractions

  • Wat Thung Saliam (Thai: วัด ทุ่งเสลี่ยม ) - Buddhist temple ( Wat ) in Tambon Thung Saliam with a famous Buddha statue made of gray sandstone, called "Luang Po Si La" (Thai: หลวง พ่อ ศิลา , literally: Honorable monk made of stone ). It shows the Buddha in an "Indian pose" sitting (legs crossed) with the meditation hand position ( Dhyana Mudra ), behind him a seven-headed Naga rises protectively . Statues of this kind are called "Pang Nak Prok" (Thai: ปาง นาคปรก ) in Thailand : protected by the Naga . The Lopburi-style statue is 85 centimeters high and 44 centimeters wide at knee height and weighs about 126 kilograms. On October 29, 1977, the statue was stolen and smuggled out of Thailand. It was later found in Great Britain just before it could be transported on to the USA. As a result, the Fine Arts Department formed a committee to intervene in the case and bring the statue back to Thailand, which was implemented on December 20, 1996 against payment of 5,200,000 Baht.

Local administration

There are three small towns ( Thesaban Tambon ) in the county:

  • Thung Saliam ( เทศบาล ตำบล ทุ่งเสลี่ยม ) consists of parts of the tambon of the same name ,
  • Khao Kaeo Si Sombun ( เทศบาล ตำบล เขา แก้ว ศรี สมบูรณ์ ) consists of the entire tambon Khao Kaeo Si Sombun,
  • Klang Dong ( เทศบาล ตำบล กลาง ดง ) consists of the entire Tambon Klang Dong.

There are also three “Tambon Administrative Organizations” (TAO, องค์การ บริหาร ส่วน ตำบล - administrative organizations) for the tambon in the district that do not belong to any city.
