Amram
Amram is a Hebrew personal name ( עמרם). In Arabic it is Imran (عمران, DMG ʿImrān ).
etymology
The typical West Semitic personal name Am (i) ram means something like uncle is sublime . Uncle here describes the father's brother more precisely. This naming element is likely to be interpreted as a deified ancestor.
origin
The name Amram appears twice in the Tanakh :
- According to Ex 6.20 EU , Amram and his wife Jochebed were the parents of Moses and Aaron . According to Num 26,58f EU Jochebed was a daughter of Levi, the ancestor of the Levites . She also gave birth to Miriam . This is called in Ex 15.20 EU prophetess, who intoned a song of praise for YHWH after the rescue from the Red Sea . According to the biblical story, all three children led the Israelites from slavery in Egypt to the promised land . Nothing has been handed down from Amram himself.
- Esr 10.34 EU names an Amram as one of the returnees from the Babylonian exile (around 539). So he was a priest and had married a foreign woman. A bigwai is named as his father.
Amram in the Koran
Sura 66 : 12 of the Koran refers the name in the Arabic spelling 'Imrān to the father of Maryam , which does not mean Mirjam, but Maria, the mother of Jesus . There he is therefore the grandfather Isa ibn Maryam ( Jesus of Nazareth ), who is called Joachim in the Protevangelium of James .
In Sura 3 : 33 the “family of Amram” ( Āl ʿImrān ) is placed alongside the “family of Abraham” ( Āl Ibrāhīm ) as a family chosen by God . Since the "Amram clan" is one of the main subjects of the sura, it was given the name Āl ʿImrān .
