Office of Hersfeld

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Office of Hersfeld (also Dechaneigericht ) was an administrative and judicial district of the Hersfeld Abbey , the Landgraviate of Hesse-Kassel and the Electorate of Hesse with its seat in Hersfeld from the 14th century to 1821 .

history

The Hersfeld Abbey had extensive possessions around Hersfeld. However, the city of Hersfeld itself managed to acquire its own jurisdiction and was therefore not part of the office. The abbot's castle , Schloss Eichen , also had its own administration and jurisdiction. Therefore, the office only included a few villages around Hersfeld. These were Friedlos , Reilos , Heenes , Kalkobes , Allmershausen , Bingartes (Hof), Meisebach (Hof), Hählgans , the Ludwigsaumühle and the Kupfermühle. The court was only competent for the lower jurisdiction . The blood jurisdiction lay with the Office Niederaula . The name Dechaneigericht probably came from the fact that the seat was in the dean's house .

In 1648 the Hersfeld Abbey was dissolved due to the Peace of Westphalia and, as the Principality of Hersfeld, part of the Landgraviate of Hessen-Kassel. The Hersfeld office had become Hessian. In the second half of the 18th century, the court district of Schloss Eichen was dissolved and came to the office of Hersfeld.

In 1806, as part of the formation of the Rhine Confederation, the Landgraviate of Hessen-Kassel was dissolved and the administrative area fell to the Kingdom of Westphalia . This is where the canton of Hersfeld came into being . After the end of the Kingdom of Westphalia, the Electorate of Hesse was re-established and the Hersfeld office was re-established. The Obergeis office and the Petersberg court were now assigned and administered in personal union.

In 1821/22 the separation of jurisdiction from administration was introduced in Kurhessen . The administrative tasks went to the district of Hersfeld , the jurisdiction to the two judicial offices Hersfeld I and II and in the second instance to the district court of Hersfeld . The office itself was dissolved.
