history

In 1003, Abbot Bernhard of Hersfeld Abbey founded the Benedictine provostry Petersberg on the mountain of the same name, which was consecrated to the Apostle Peter . The provost had some property around Hersfeld. In the dispute over the Vogteirechte for the Petersberg ("advocatio Hersfeldensis in monte sancti Petri") between the abbey and the Landgrave Ludwig III. Abbot Siegfried of Thuringia won the Reichstag in Erfurt in 1181 . In 1215 the abbey's bailiwick rights were reaffirmed and the provost's office was expanded. As part of the territorialization , the Petersberg court emerged from this. The court was also claimed by the von Buchenau . In October 1312, the Hersfeld abbot Simon I von Buchenau summoned 25 witnesses to settle the dispute. However, these confirmed the provost's rights and rejected Buchenau's claims.

In 1648 the Hersfeld Abbey was dissolved due to the Peace of Westphalia and, as the Principality of Hersfeld, part of the Landgraviate of Hessen-Kassel. The Petersberg court had become Hessian. In the course of time, the Petersberg court lost significant space to the Friedewald office . It then included Petersberg , Sorga , Niedernsolz (Sölzerhöfe), Oberrode , Kathus and Rotensee .

In 1806, as part of the formation of the Rhine Confederation, the Landgraviate of Hessen-Kassel was dissolved and the administrative area fell to the Kingdom of Westphalia . This is where the canton of Hersfeld came into being . After the end of the Kingdom of Westphalia, the Electorate of Hesse was created again and the Petersberg court was rebuilt, but was now part of the Hersfeld office .

In 1821/22 the separation of jurisdiction from administration was introduced in Kurhessen . The administrative tasks went to the Hersfeld district , the jurisdiction to the Hersfeld district court . The office itself was dissolved.
