For the Dutch Pirate Party (German "Piratenpartei") Ancilla van de Leest was on the list in the local elections in Amsterdam in 2014 , where she received the second most votes in her party with 1905 votes. Among other things, this enabled the Pirate Party to win its first mandate in the Netherlands in the nationwide local elections on March 19, 2014 in the Amsterdam West District Council . She also ran a campaign aimed primarily at camera surveillance and excessive data collection. In the run-up to her candidacy, she was already a spokeswoman for the party, was in contact with the media and did media stunts to raise awareness of the party.

On June 26, 2016, van de Leest was elected the top candidate for the Pirate Party for the 2017 Dutch parliamentary elections. Before that, she took part in Pirates on Tour , during which various list candidates traveled through the Netherlands to debate with one another, with visitors being able to bring up topics themselves.

In interviews, van de Leest stated that her priorities were to enhance privacy and prevent the abolition of cash. It envisages a development that will impose high costs on entrepreneurs who use cash to stimulate debit cards . She sees this as a privacy undermining development where a person can be tracked based on their payment history. In addition to data protection rights in general, the party is particularly focused on strengthening data protection in the relationship between the government and its citizens, as it sees a bad, disproportionate impact of commercial interests on the fundamental rights of citizens. She says the government poses a higher risk of violating citizens' fundamental rights than businesses. In September 2016, she campaigned for the victims of a data breach in the Dutch city of Almelo .

On April 6, 2017, van de Leest announced that she would leave the Pirate Party as the top candidate and spokesperson and instead focus on her own projects. As a token of her support for the party, she stated that she would remain a passive member and would continue to advise party members.
