Hahn joined the SED in 1985 and became a member of the PDS in 1990 (today: Die Linke ). In 1990 he was a member of the Central Round Table of the GDR and a year later a member of the federal executive committee of the PDS. From 1991 to 1995 Hahn was a member of the state executive committee of the PDS in Saxony and from 1992 to 1999 a member of the federal party council of the PDS. Since 1994 he has been a member of the Saxon Switzerland District Council (- Eastern Ore Mountains). Until 2008 he was parliamentary group leader of the PDS and the left. From 1999 to 2002 he was also a city councilor in Heidenau .

Saxon State Parliament

From December 1994 to November 2013 he was a member of the Saxon state parliament. From 1995 to 2007 he was the parliamentary manager of the parliamentary group. From 2007 he was chairman of his group. In 2012 he declared his candidacy for the Bundestag and therefore did not run for election as parliamentary group chairman. From 1995 until his departure he was a member of the Presidium of the State Parliament.

He was a member of the committee for school and sport as well as several committees of inquiry, including as chairman of the Sachsenring investigation committee and deputy chairman of the Paunsdorf investigation committee. In 1996 Hahn became the first PDS deputy nationwide to become a member of the parliamentary control commission to review the state office for the protection of the constitution , of which he was a member until 2013.

The Dresden public prosecutor saw in Hahn one of the leading figures in the blockade of the demonstration carried out by right-wing extremists on the anniversary of the air raids on Dresden in February 2010 and investigated him for violating the Assembly Act. To this end, at the beginning of March 2011 an application was made to lift his immunity . This took place on October 12, 2011 with the votes of the government coalition consisting of the CDU and FDP as well as the NPD . Hahn's own parliamentary group as well as the Greens and the SPD voted against. The decision was legally and politically controversial. In November 2012 the trial against André Hahn was closed. Since all court costs and Hahn's legal fees went to the state treasury, this decision was tantamount to an acquittal. In view of the fact that of the 12,000 participants only proceedings were initiated against four left-wing MPs, Hahn described the proceedings as an “absurd process”.
