André Michel (art historian)

André Michel (full name Charles Paul André Michel ; born November 7, 1853 in Montpellier , † October 13, 1925 in Paris ) was a French art historian .

Live and act

André Michel, from a Protestant family from Montpellier, first studied history and art at the university there. From 1872 to 1876 he studied law at the University of Aix-en-Provence. From 1877 to 1880 he studied at the École pratique des hautes études in Paris, he also studied with Charles Blanc at the Collège de France and with Hippolyte Taine at the École des beaux-arts .

He worked as an art critic for numerous magazines ( Le Parlement , L'Art , La Revue alsacienne ), since 1884 wrote for the Gazette des Beaux-Arts , since 1886 for the Journal des débats . He discussed numerous exhibitions there, such as the Salon de Paris and the “Exposition universelle de Paris” from 1889 and 1900. From 1883 to 1893 André Michel taught art history at the École Spéciale d'Architecture .

In 1893 he became assistant to curator Louis Courajod (1841-1896) at the Département des sculptures des Louvre . André Michel followed Courajod in 1896 and taught the history of French sculpture at the École du Louvre . In 1920 he left the Louvre and became professor of French art history at the Collège de France . Retired from 1923, he continued to work on his multi-volume history of art . The last volume was published in 1929 by Paul Vitry , his successor in office at the Louvre, who also wrote a detailed obituary for him.

Honors

In 1900 he became a knight and in 1919 an officer of the Legion of Honor . In 1917 André Michel was elected to the Paris Académie des Beaux-Arts .
