André Pierre (born July 29, 1914 in Port-au-Prince ; † October 4, 2005 , Croix-des-Missions , Port-au-Prince) was a Haitian naive painter , voodoo priest and farmer .

life and work

André Pierre was a self-taught artist . His first steps into painting took place in the voodoo temples , where he painted pumpkins that served as an offering for loa . Filmmaker Maya Deren saw this early work and introduced Pierre to the Center d'Art d'Haïti founded by DeWitt Peters in the late 1940s . Pierre began to paint on canvas and cardboard.

Pierre's works, usually oil paintings , are characterized by a wealth of details, bright colors and clear contours. The focus of his iconic pictures are often humanized, costumed loas like Baron Samedi and Grand Bois, provided with Veves , against the background of tropical forests, on river banks or with other figures at celebrations.

Pierre's paintings found many buyers in the USA because of their strong spirituality . By a pink Chevi - Cabriolet rose, Pierre fulfilled a dream. He distributed most of the proceeds from the sale of his paintings to the poor in the slums of his hometown.

The Haitian painters André Pierre, Hector Hippolyte (1894–1948), Castera Bazile (1923–1966), Wilson Bigaud (1931–2010) and Rigaud Benoit (1911–1986) created works with religious themes ( Christianity and Voodoo). Oil paintings by Pierre were exhibited at documenta 14 in 2017 .

The Haitian filmmaker Arnold Antonin shot the half-hour documentary “Andre Pierre: celui qui peint le bon” (2003) about him.
