Andravida is a small town in the Peloponnese in the Greek region of western Greece . It is located around 63 km southwest of Patras and 33 km northwest of Pyrgos . There is a military base in the east of the city. In the northeast there are forests on the hills east of Tragano. In the northwest lies the Andravidaiko plain. In the south there is a plain. The distance to the sea is 7 km.

Andravida was recognized as a rural parish (kinotita) in 1912 and raised to an urban parish (dimos) in 1948 . With the administrative reform in 2010 , it was merged with three other municipalities to form the newly created municipality of Andravida-Kyllini , where it has since formed a municipality.

history

Andravida (in Frankish times Andréville ) was the capital of the Frankish principality of Achaia from 1295 to 1460 , after which the city became part of the Ottoman Empire until Greek independence. In Franconian times the city became the seat of the Bishop of Olena.

The place was the seat of the titular diocese of Andravida .

buildings

Andravida owned several buildings from Frankish times, including once at a Dominican monastery belonging Ayasofya (Hagia Sophia), the rib-vaulted eastern choir is obtained on a St. Stephen's Church ( Franciscans ) and the Hl. Jacob church dedicated ( Knights Templar ), which have not survived.

Economy, infrastructure and transport

The farm (Asteris) is located near the town . Mainly tomatoes, potatoes, watermelons, corn and other agricultural products are grown. Olives and lemons thrive on the hills to the east.

Andravida is on the Greek national road 9, which is also European route 55 . The narrow-gauge railway line from Patras to Pyrgos, opened in 1860, also ran through the city.

Military airfield

The air force base ( IATA : PYR , ICAO : LGAD ), which is about 2.5 km east of Andravida, was established in 1955. The asphalt runway with an orientation of 16/34 is 3,139 m long. The military airfield is 17 m (55 ft) above sea level . World icon
