Andrea Jean James (* 16th January 1967 ) is an American transgender - human rights - activist , film producer , director and writer .

James grew up in Indiana and was educated at Wabash College and the University of Chicago . After college, James worked in Chicago for ten years. From 1996 she created consumer sites Transsexual Road Map, HairFacts and HairTell. James has written for Boing Boing , The Advocate , The Huffington Post, and The Atlantic .

James moved to Los Angeles in 2003 and co-founded Deep Stealth Productions with writer and entertainer Calpernia Addams . They produced how-to videos and produced and appeared on the first transgender cast of The Vagina Monologues and brought out a new piece written by Eve Ensler . James then appeared in Transamerica in 2005 and trained film star Felicity Huffman .

She worked with other transgender women, including Lynn Conway and Deirdre McCloskey , to end the academic exploitation of transgender people.

James wrote several books and consulted authors, including the autobiography of Mark 947 from the year 2002 by Calpernia Addams, the autobiography Pholomolo by Veronique Renard in 2007, the self-help book in 2014, Trans Bodies, Trans Selves and self-help parody Suck Less of Willam Belli . She worked with Deanne Thornton as co-editor on the anthology Letters for My Sisters (2014). It is in the photo books Vagina Warriors by Eve Ensler and Joyce Tenneson and The World According to Wonder by World of Wonder, in the Instructions for Use Facial Feminization Surgery by Douglas Ousterhout, and in 51%: Women and the Future of Politics by Terri Spahr Nelson.

James has worked with social media platforms like Facebook through content moderation and community standards. In 2016 she worked with Tinder on introducing gender-specific profile options.

In 2014 she directed Alec Mapa: Baby Daddy , a comedy film with Alec Mapa . In 2016, she took part in the Intelligence Squared gender identity discussion filmed in Sydney for BBC World News . She was the producer of the 2017 documentary Gender Revolution with Katie Couric .
