Andrea Rinaldo

Andrea Rinaldo (born September 13, 1954 in Venice ) is an Italian engineer and hydrologist at the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL).

Rinaldo obtained a Dr.-Ing. In 1978 from the University of Padua . and a Ph.D. from Purdue University in 1983. in fluid mechanics . In 1985 he received a professorship for fluid mechanics at the University of Trento , but soon turned to hydrology . In 1992 he moved to the University of Padua and in 2008 to the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne. Visiting professorships have taken him to Texas A&M University , the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Princeton University .

Andrea Rinaldo deals with transport phenomena in the water cycle , hydrogeomorphology (in particular the fractal geometry of water bodies), water ecology , stochastic models of natural phenomena, networks in nature, the scalability of ecosystems and river systems as corridors for species , populations and pathogens. Rinaldo has (as of July 2018) an h-index of 80. He published many of his works together with Ignacio Rodríguez-Iturbe .

Rinaldo was elected to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering in 2006, the National Academy of Sciences in 2012 , and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2018 . He has been Vice President of the Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti , since June 2015 , of which he has been a member since 1995.

As a student, Rinaldo was the captain of Petrarca Rugby from Padua and in 1977/78 he was a four-time national rugby player for Italy. He is a board member of the Federazione Italiana Rugby . In 2017 he published a book about the sport, Del Rugby - Verso una ecologia della pallaovale .

Andrea Rinaldo is married and has three children.
