Andreas Dengel (* 1961 ) is a German computer scientist and university professor as well as managing director of the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) in Kaiserslautern, which was founded in 1988 .

Life

Andreas Dengel studied computer science with a minor in economics at the University of Kaiserslautern until 1986 . Subsequently, he was in 1989 at the University of Stuttgart in computer science Dr. rer. nat. PhD. After working at IBM , Siemens and a research stay at Xerox PARC in Palo AltoIn 1993, as Scientific Director, he took over the management of a research area at the DFKI, which today is called “Smart Data and Knowledge Services”. At the same time, Andreas Dengel was offered a C3 professorship in connection with the chair for knowledge-based systems at the Department of Computer Science at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern, which was upgraded to a C4 position in 1997 and to a W3 position in 2013 after external offers were rejected. Since 2009 he has also been authorized to teach and take examinations at Osaka Prefecture University and has a professorship (kyakuin) in the Department of Computer Science and Intelligent Systems .

Andreas Dengel has chaired numerous international conferences and is on the editorial board of international magazines and book series. He has written or edited 14 books and is the author of more than 500 scientific publications, many of which have received the Best Paper Award. To date, he has supervised more than 450 doctoral, master and bachelor theses.

In addition, he is the founder, initiator and mentor of many successful start-up companies, three of which were awarded the "Pioneer Spirit Award", first prize in the "1,2,3 GO" start-up competition and the "Cebit Innovation Award" . In 2015 he was honored with the "Founding Sponsor of the Year" award for his contributions.

Andreas Dengel is a Fellow of the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR) and Chairman of the Flexible Factory Partner Alliance (FFPA). He advises academic institutions, research programs and ministries in Germany and abroad.

Awards and honors

For his scientific achievements, he received the Alcatel / SEL Award on Technical Communication and was named "Distinguished Honorary Professor" (tokubetu eiyo kyoju) at Osaka Prefecture University in March 2018 , an award that only five researchers have received within 135 years received. His research focuses on machine learning , pattern recognition , quantified learning, data mining , semantic technologies and document analysis.

For his research work in the field of document analysis, Andreas Dengel was named one of the most influential scientists in 50 years of AI history in Germany by a jury on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) . elected. In the same year he also received the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Int'l Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition (ICDAR) in Sydney , Australia .
