Andreas Kost

Andreas Kost (born August 13, 1962 in Solingen ) is a German political scientist . He is the deputy head of the state center for political education in North Rhine-Westphalia , where he is responsible for publications. He is also an honorary professor at the Institute for Political Science and the NRW School of Governance at the University of Duisburg-Essen .

Life

In 1982, Kost received his Abitur at the municipal high school in Erkrath-Hochdahl . 1982 to 1983 he did his basic military service in Stade , Rotenburg (Wümme) and in Hilden . Then he began his studies at the University of Duisburg. In 1991 he completed his studies as a social scientist with a degree in political science and the minor subjects economic policy and law. Between 1990 and 1993 he worked as a freelancer for infas in Bonn, the state center for political education in North Rhine-Westphalia and for the Institute for Local and Administrative Sciences in Düsseldorf, which he helped set up. In 1999 he was awarded a doctorate by an empirical study on petitions and referendums in North Rhine-Westphalia. sc. pol. PhD at the University of Duisburg .

Since 1993 he has been employed by the state center for political education in North Rhine-Westphalia . There he has been deputy head since 2008 and is responsible for the entire area of ​​publications.

Kost's work and research focuses on general aspects of the development of democracy, concrete political participation (in particular direct democracy ), local politics , bureaucracy and organization as well as regional studies of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Kost is a member of the board of trustees of Mehr Demokratie and a member of the scientific advisory board of the planning group "History, Politics and Democracy of North Rhine-Westphalia" for the further development of scientific research into regional contemporary history and politics as well as for the establishment of a "House of History of North Rhine-Westphalia".

Kost is the author and editor of numerous books and articles. His writings on direct democracy have a standard character. In 2003 and 2010 in the second edition, together with Hans-Georg Wehling, he was the editor of the anthology "Local politics in the German states" of the series of the state centers for political education. In 2005 the anthology "Direct Democracy in the German States" followed (sole editor) and in 2010, together with Reinhold Weber and Werner Rellecke, the anthology "Parties in the German States". In 2019 he published the “Lexicon direct democracy in Germany”, which he edited with Marcel Solar. In December 2006 he was appointed honorary professor by the University of Duisburg-Essen .
