Life

Born and raised in Bamberg , Schwinn studied oboe at the Municipal Conservatory (now the Musikhochschule) in Würzburg . After a short time in the Philharmonic Orchestra of the City of Frankfurt / Oder and in the City Theater in Heidelberg, he was drafted into the Wehrmacht, where he worked as a medic and in the Army Music Corps on the Eastern Front. From 1945 to 1986 he was principal cor anglais with the Munich Philharmonic . In addition, he played for a long time for the Bavarian State Opera and in the Munich Bach Choir under Karl Richter and in the orchestra of the Bayreuth Richard Wagner Festival. As a chamber musician (including a wind quintet), he has participated in numerous world premieres of contemporary works.

Schwinn was particularly known in professional circles for his romantic interpretation of the cor anglais solo in Antonín Dvořák's Symphony No. 9 “From the New World” .

He is said to have developed the technique of "permanent breathing" for the oboe and the English horn and introduced it in Germany, which enables woodwinds to hold a note for almost any length of time without interruption.

For his achievements he was named "Chamber Musician of the City of Munich".
