Andreas Zeier Cappelen

Andreas Zeier Cappelen (born January 31, 1915 in Vang , Oppland , † September 2, 2008 in Stavanger ) was a Norwegian lawyer and politician of the Arbeiderpartiet , who was several times a minister in various Norwegian governments .

Life

After attending school, Cappelen studied law and graduated in 1939. After the end of the Second World War in 1945 he became the acting public prosecutor for the negotiation of treason criminal proceedings in Rogaland and held this office until 1947.

At the same time he began his political career in local politics and was from 1945 to 1947 as a representative of the Workers' Party ( Arbeiderpartiet ) for the first time a member of the City Council of Stavanger . He was then from 1947 to 1958 city lawyer and director of the wages department of the city administration of Stavanger and additionally from 1957 to 1958 treasurer . In addition, he was again a member of the Stavanger City Council from 1952 to 1957.

In 1958, Prime Minister Einar Gerhardsen appointed him Minister for Local Affairs and Labor in his third government and was last in this government in 1963 as Minister of Finance.

After Prime Minister John Lyng's bourgeois minority government, which lasted only four weeks , Cappelen was appointed to Prime Minister Gerhardsen's fourth government on September 25, 1963, to which he belonged until October 12, 1965.

After he was again city lawyer and director of the wages department of the city of Stavanger between 1966 and 1967, he was again a member of the Stavanger city council from 1968 to 1971. He was also President of the Stavanger District Court from 1969 and 1981, and from 1971 to 1977 a member of the Board of Directors of Norges Bank , Norway's central bank .

On March 17, 1971, Prime Minister Trygve Bratteli appointed him Foreign Minister in his first government, which he served until the end of Bratteli's term on October 18, 1972. Between 1979 and 1980 he was also Minister of Justice in the cabinet of Prime Minister Odvar Nordli and later again a member of the Stavanger City Council between 1984 and 1991.

Andreas Zeiler Cappelen was a younger brother of the politician Hans Johan Zeier Cappelen and the diplomat Johan Zeier Cappelen .
