The St. Andrew's Church (Polish: Kościół Świętego Andrzeja ) is located in the Polish city of Krakow in the Grodzkastraße.

history

In 1080 the St. Andrew's Church , which also serves as a fortified church, was built from solid stone in the Romanesque style. It consists of a body from which two octagonal towers with narrow, coupled arched windows grow.

The church fulfilled its purpose as a military defense system in 1241, when Krakow was destroyed in an attack by the Tatars , while St. Andrew's Church was able to repel the attackers.

In 1320 the St. Andrew's Church was given to the Order of the Poor Clares . The brick Gothic oratory dates from this period . Today it is used as a sacristy .

Architecture and interior design

In the interior of the church there are rich baroque furnishings and lavish stucco decorations, which were added during a renovation after 1700. The pulpit in the form of a ship and the choir gallery , which are already designed in Rococo style, are particularly striking . The baroque main altar is attributed to the Polish architect Francesco Placidi (1710 / 15–1783).

In 1639 new hoods were put on the two towers, which are richly decorated. Since then, these have formed a baroque contrast to the Romanesque facade.
