Andreasmesse 2014, marketplace

The Andreasmesse is an annual folk festival in Detmold that goes back over 400 years of tradition and was first celebrated in 1604. The name of the fair goes back to the apostle Andreas . In Detmold it is the largest inner city fair. St. Andrew's Mass begins annually on the Wednesday after the Day of Repentance and Prayer and ends on the following Sunday ( First Advent ).

history

Around 1285 Detmold received the status of a legal town with Lippstadt town charter . This town charter was regularly confirmed by several noble lords and counts of Lippe. Lord Simon III. granted the city a city and market privilege around 1361 . With this market privilege, the city has been granted a fair on St. Vitus Day , June 15, which has been held since 1265 . A fair is to be understood as an annual market of supra-local importance. In addition, Detmold got permission for a second fair on the Sunday before Martini (November 11th). The market privilege was valid for the day in question, as well as for two days before and after.

In 1603 Count Simon VI confirmed . both markets, but moved the autumn market to Martini for eight days. At the same time he approved a weekly market of local importance only for food every Wednesday . In 1604, Simon IV postponed the autumn market again to November 30, the feast day of the Apostle Andrew , which was granted for three days at a time. The city was allowed to levy demurrage for the market stalls, while the sovereign was entitled to the customs duty levied at the city gates. The Detmold Markets were publicly announced by a printed notice dated May 13, 1604.

These fairs were primarily sales fairs and only to a small extent were popular amusements. The relationship in favor of the fair only changed in the 20th century, so that today there are only remnants of the former merchandise trade. At the beginning of the 20th century, local craftsmen and tradespeople complained about the competition from hawkers and traveling traders at the Andreas Fair. On April 18, 1912, the Detmold city council decided to hold a cattle market instead of the Andreas Fair . In addition, an amusement park should take place for two days . This change in the Detmold fair regulations was supported by the Lippe government. The 1912 fair took place in its new form, but there were again violent protests. As a result of the lower number of visitors compared to previous years, numerous showmen , traveling traders and Detmold businessmen suffered losses. On April 24, 1913, the city council repealed the changes to the fairground regulations and the Andreasmesse has been taking place in its old form ever since.
