Simon III (Lip)

Simon III zur Lippe (* around 1340; † 1410 ) was from 1360 to 1410 sovereign of the rule Lippe .

He was the son of Otto von Lippe , from whom he inherited the city of Lemgo . His rule in the surrounding area remains uncertain at first. On December 27, 1368, the castle men of the lordly castles and the representatives of the cities of Horn , Detmold and Blomberg declared in the Pactum unionis that in all future they would only recognize the heir as sovereign to whom the most important cities of the rule, namely Lippstadt and Lemgo.

In the home country around the cities of Lippstadt and Rheda , however, the situation was difficult, because after the death of his uncle Bernhard around 1365, his widow Richarda first handed over his inheritance to the husband of their eldest daughter, Otto VI. from Tecklenburg . In 1366 she revoked the surrender and designated her nephew Simon as heir. Otto V, however, refused to hand over the inheritance, triggering a struggle that lasted for decades. Simon got into Otto's captivity in 1371.

After his release about three years later, he had to pay such a high ransom that in 1376 he had to pledge half of Lippstadt to his mother's family, the Counts of Mark .

The rule of Rheda with the town of Rheda with legal capacity since 1355 and other possessions was established in 1379 by the troops of the dioceses Paderborn , Münster , Osnabrück , the towns of Münster and Osnabrück and Engelbert III. conquered by the marrow . The attempt to take over Everstein County through a hereditary fraternity agreement was unsuccessful. After the Eversteiner feud with the dukes of Braunschweig-Lüneburg , the county finally fell to Braunschweig in 1408.

Simon was married to Irmgard (Ermengard) von Hoya and had seven children. His eldest son Bernhard became his successor.
