Andrew Cruickshank

Andrew John Maxton Cruickshank (born December 25, 1907 in Aberdeen , Aberdeenshire , Scotland , † April 29, 1988 in London , England ) was a British actor .

Life

Cruickshank attended Grammar School in Aberdeen and studied civil engineering . In the profession he was trained, however, he was never active, instead he took up a career as a theater actor . First, he was part of the ensemble of local theater, in 1930 he starred in Othello at the Savoy Theater and in 1934 he made his debut on Broadway . On his return to London in 1935 he played at the Gate Theater in Victoria Regina . From 1937 he played with the Old Vic Company in Macbeth , A Midsummer Night's Dream and Hamlet, among others . Until 1987 he appeared in numerous theater productions, mostly in London; between 1951 and 1952 he returned once more to Broadway, where he appeared next to Uta Hagen in George Bernard Shaw's drama Saint Joan as Richard de Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick .

Cruickshank first appeared in a 1937 film. Among other things, he was in The Great Atlantic , Richard III. , The Battle of the River Plate and The 39 Steps to be seen. In the Miss Marple film Four Women and a Murder , he played as Judge Crosby at Margaret Rutherford's side . He gained greater prominence among British television audiences through his portrayal of Dr. Angus Cameron in the television series Dr. Finlay's Casebook , of which 191 episodes were created between 1962 and 1971.

Cruickshank was married and had three children. In his memory, a street in Milton Keynes , Buckinghamshire was named after him.
