Andrew "Andy" Ducat (born February 16, 1886 in Brixton , London , † July 23, 1942 in St John's Wood , London) was an English cricket and football player . He is one of the few athletes who have represented England internationally in both sports. He was also active as a coach in both sports.

Career

Cricket

Although Ducat was born in Brixton, he grew up in Southend. Since 1906 at the Oval , he quickly became part of the team there and played alongside Tom Hayward , Jack Hobbs and Ernest Hayes .

He became known as the batsman of the Surrey County Cricket Club and was named one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year in 1920. However, he was repeatedly slowed down by injuries. In 1912 a broken leg nearly ended his career, and in 1924 he missed the entire season after breaking an arm.

However, he was also able to shine with excellent results: in 1928 he managed 994 runs within six weeks. His only appearance in a test match for England was against Australia in 1921 . This was unsuccessful, however, as he was eliminated early in both innings .

Ducat played cricket until 1931, before working as a cricket coach at Eton College for five years .

Soccer

Ducat began his football career outside the league system at Westcliff Athletic and Southend Athletic , before moving to Woolwich Arsenal (now Arsenal FC) in the First Division in 1905 . At first he played as a center forward, but was used from the 1906/07 season as a right wing runner and occasionally even as a right defender . From 1907/08 regular player, he received his first invitation to an international match for England on February 12, 1910. The game was won 6-1 against Ireland in Belfast . In his second international match on March 14 of the same year, he scored the 1-0 final against Wales .

In 1912 Ducat was sold to Aston Villa by the troubled Arsenal for £ 1,000 . Recovered from a broken leg in 1912, he made it to become a regular player and captain of the team. In 1920 he won the FA Cup and Ducat was called back to the national team.

In 1921 Ducat moved to Fulham , where he was in 1924 after his retirement as a player successor Philip Kelsos , who had coached him in his days at Arsenal, in the dugout. However, the team got into trouble under his leadership and he was released in 1926. This made him the first coach of the club to suffer this fate.

From 1936 Ducat worked mainly as a sports reporter. He collapsed and died during an entertainment game on July 23, 1942 at Lord's Cricket Ground in London.
