Andrew J. Weinstein

Andrew Jacob Weinstein (born May 1, 1850 or 1851 in Kiev , Kiev Governorate , Russian Empire , † December 14, 1915 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , United States ) was a British Anglican priest , chaplain and missionary .

Weinstein was born into a Jewish family in what was then the Russian city of Kiev , which is why Yiddish was the first language he learned. He was baptized a Christian in 1870 while studying at a French college in Beirut . After serving as a missionary for the London Jews' Society in Port Said , he graduated from King's College London in 1888 and was ordained a deacon . From 1890 to 1893 he was curate at the church St Andrew Undershaft and graduated from the University College of the University of Durham from. In 1894 he traveled to South Africa , served as curate at St. James Church in Dundee in the Anglican diocese of Natal and from 1895 was the first Anglican rector in the city of Polokwane , at the local Christ Church in the diocese of Pretoria . After a short return to England he worked from 1897 to 1907 in various Anglican parishes in Australia, namely in Blackall , Queensland , in Collie (Western Australia) and in Norseman (Western Australia) . In 1907 he moved to New York City and then went to Washington, DC , where he served as chaplain of the Church of Our Savior in 1908 . In 1909 he became an assistant pastor at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Philadelphia and also worked as a port chaplain and missionary to the Jews .
