Andries Boelens
Andries Boelens (also: Boelenz , Boelensz. , Andries Boel Dircksz. Or Andries Boelen Dircksz ; * September 3, 1455 in Amsterdam ; † November 20, 1519 ibid) was mayor and regent of Amsterdam from 1496 to 1517 . He was also the most important member of the Boelens Loen and was regarded as the founder of the oligarchy of the so-called Boelen-Heijnen - clan .
history
The city of Amsterdam had four mayors in office at the same time, each of whom was elected for a year. Boelens held the office in the years 1496-1497, 1499, 1501-1502, 1504-1505, 1507-1510, 1512, 1514-1515 and 1517. In 1500 and 1503 he was thesaurier ordinaris ( treasurer ) of the city.
Andries Boelens' many terms of office indicate the emergence of a government elite in Amsterdam at the beginning of modern times , when offices were increasingly reserved for members of fewer families. Andries' grandfather Dirck Boelens was mayor of Amsterdam three times, in 1447, 1453 and 1457. When he died, he left his family with large estates in the vicinity of Amsterdam, three houses in the city and a significant sum of money. Andries Boelens' long term of office from 1507 to 1510 came about when he was elected in 1509 as the successor to Dirck Heymensz Ruysch , who died in office . An uninterrupted term of office of more than two years would not have been allowed.
Life
Andries Boelens was the son of Boel Dirck Boelens , who was mayor of Amsterdam from 1470 and died there in 1483, and Lijsbeth (Elisabeth) Allertsdr, died on September 1, 1482. In 1484 Andries was appointed to the city council. In 1496, after he was over 40, he became mayor for the first time. At that time, 40 years of age was the minimum age to be allowed to hold the office of mayor of Amsterdam.
Andries Boelens married Maria Jansdr Beth, daughter of the long-time mayor Jan Jansz Beth . He had eleven children with her, three of whom died in childhood. His daughter Geertruyd married Jan Martsz Merens (* 1480). His daughter Lijsbeth was the wife of Cornelis Hendricksz Loen (1481–1547), who was mayor of Amsterdam three times between 1529 and 1533. This couple founded the Boelens Loen line , from which several mayors of the city emerged and which were related by marriage to the Bicker and De Graeff families. In the 16th century there was a dense network of related noble families in Amsterdam, who divided power and offices among themselves. The rulers of such families who ran for mayor's office and other important offices within the city were called regents .
When Andries died in 1519, he left his son Albert Andriesz Boelens († 1551), mayor of Amsterdam nine times between 1520 and 1537, a fortune of 14,355 guilders , land, ships and a house in Amsterdam. Andries Boelen's wife Maria died on June 29, 1525 in Amsterdam.
The poet Joost van den Vondel wrote poems about the rulers of Amsterdam and their ancestors in the early 17th century, the Dutch Golden Age . Special respect he paid Andries Boelens, he usually Ridder Boelens called because it allegedly by Emperor Maximilian I to Ritter had been beaten. The fact is that during the tenure of Andries Boelens, the emperor granted the city of Amsterdam the right to add the imperial crown over the city's coat of arms. Van den Vondel wrote about it:
India men uwen gryzen stam,
The heerschappij des lants geschapen,
En die 's lants vryburg Amsterdam
Gekroont heeft met de kroon van' t wapen,
Den lauwer schonk, die niet verdort,
Noch schoot de dankbaarheid te kort.
Had Andries not watered the city,
En 's Keizers glori trouw verdadight,
August had met zijn edel swaert
Den Ridder spader begenadight,
Vienna's militancy Oostenryck claimed
The Amstels scolded de kroon afdraagt.
