Overview of the main family relationships of the Amsterdam oligarchy around the families Boelens Loen, De Graeff , Bicker (van Swieten) , Witsen and Johan de Witt in the Golden Age .

The first mayors from the Boelens family were Jacob Boel , mayor from 1420–1421 and Claes Jansz Boel , mayor from 1431 and 1434 in the 15th century .

The members of the Boelens family were able to form a solid oligarchic elite within Amsterdam through their long tenure in the city government . In 1495 they were able to take over power from the clan ("maagschap") of Jacob Jonge Jacobsz and in 1538 they had to hand them over to the clan of Hendrick Dirckszn and Joost Buyck (until around 1578). The reason for the loss of their prominent position was also due to the religious attitude of the family, also in the Baptist rebellion .

At the beginning of the development was Dirck Boelens who was able to give him room with his appointments as the ruling mayor in 1447, 1453, 1454 and 1457. When he died, he left his family with large estates in the Amsterdam area, three houses in the city, and a significant fortune. His son Boel Dirck Boelens continued this development with his appointments from 1470 to 1478. An outstanding family member is his son Andries Boelens who headed the city government in the years 1496–1497, 1499, 1501–1502, 1504–1505, 1507–1510, 1512, 1514–1515 and 1517. Due to his long term of office and the resulting concentration of power and development, Boelens is considered the progenitor of the rulers of the Golden Age of the Netherlands , who for the most part referred to a descent from this. In addition to Andries Boelens, Andries Dircksz Boelens also worked as mayor in the city government from 1501 to 1510.

Andries Boelens son Albert Andriesz Boelens inherited from his father a fortune of 14,355 guilders , land, ships and a magnificent town house in Amsterdam. He was able to carry on the political legacy without interruption and was elected mayor nine times between 1520 and 1537. With his death, the Boelens family died out in the male line. Andries Boelens daughter Lijsbeth Boelens married Cornelis Hendricksz Loen (1481–1547), who was three times mayor of Amsterdam between 1529 and 1533. She founded the Boelens Loen line from which several mayors of the city emerged and who were related to the great rulers of the Golden Age De Graeff and Bicker , who came to power after the Alteratie of Amsterdam in 1578. In the course of the 16th century, a dense network of related noble families arose in Amsterdam, who divided power and offices among themselves. The rulers of such families who ran for mayor's office and other important offices within the city were called regents. Lijsbeth's grandson Cornelis Andriesz Boelens Loen (1552–1584) was a trusted advisor to William I of Orange-Nassau .

Albert Andriesz Boelens grandson Jacob Andriesz Boelens stands out from the Boelens' lineage. In addition to his work as 13-time mayor of Amsterdam, he was also the State Councilor of Holland, Deputy of the Dutch States General and Dutch envoy to the court of the East Frisian ruler Count Edzard II , as well as in Denmark was with King Christian IV . Another mayor from the family was Jan Claes Boelens who carried out this office in 1600.
