Androclus and the Lion is a literary film adaptation of Kurt Jung-Alsen from 1968 with Herbert Köfer in the title role, produced by the DEFA studio for feature films (Potsdam-Babelsberg) for German television . The film is loosely based on George Bernard Shaw's play Androcles and the Lion from 1912, which was based on the Roman slave Androclus .

The film had its television premiere on October 25, 1969 on DFF 1 .

action

The action takes place in Rome at the time of the persecution of Christians . Androclus, the tailor, fled because he was severely abused. He found refuge in a cave in which a lion lived, which had caught a thorn in its paw. After an initial fear of the lion, he tended the wound. Soon afterwards the predator was better and Androclus and the lion stayed together from then on, so they shared their food. After three years, Androclus wanted to go out into the world again. He was intercepted by soldiers and sentenced to death. A lion was supposed to eat him in the Circus Maximus . But it was the lion he had helped and only licked his friend's hand. Androclus was pardoned and allowed to take the lion with him.
