Angela Evans Smith, Baroness Smith of Basildon (born January 7, 1959 ) is a British politician. Angela Smith is a member of the Co-operative Party , which is linked to the Labor Party and whose politicians can call themselves the Labor Cooperative Party.

Education and professional activity before entering politics

Angela Evans graduated from Leicester Polytechnic (now De Montfort University ) with a bachelor's degree in public administration . From 1981 to 1983 she trained as an accountant in the administration of the London Borough of Newham . From 1983 to 1995 she worked in the press department of the League Against Cruel Sports, a British animal welfare organization. Angela Evans worked from 1995 to 1997 as a research assistant for the House of Representatives Alun Michael .

Political career

From 1989 to 1997 she was a member of the Essex County Council . In the 1997 general election, Angela Smith stood as a Labor candidate in the Basildon constituency and won it. In 1999 she became the Parliamentary Private Secretary to Paul Boateng , who was then Secretary of State in the Home Office . Angela Smith resigned from this role in 2002 when she became Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for North Earthland , a position she held until 2005. From 2006 to 2007 she worked in the Department for Communities and Local Government , which reports to the Deputy Prime Minister in the Cabinet Office . She then became Parliamentary Private Secretary to Prime Minister Gordon Brown and was allowed to attend cabinet meetings in this position, which she held until a cabinet reshuffle in June 2009. From June 2009 until the British general election in May 2010 , she was a Secretary of State in the Cabinet Office.

In the general election in May 2010, she lost her seat in the British House of Commons , which she had held since 1997. She was named a Life Peer on the 2010 Dissolution Honors List and was inducted into the House of Lords on July 8, 2010 as Baroness Smith of Basildon , of Basildon in the County of Essex.
