Attack of the 20 Meter Woman is a science fiction film produced by Bernard Woolner for Allied Artists Pictures . Directed by Nathan Juran based on a script by Mark Hanna . Allison Hayes , William Hudson and Yvette Vickers played the leading roles . The soundtrack was composed by Ronald Stein . The film adopted the concept of resizable people from films such as The Colossus and The Incredible Tale of Mister C. , but took a woman as the protagonist.
The plot revolves around the plight of Nancy Archer, a wealthy heiress who has a clash with an alien that makes her grow into a giantess. She uses her size to get revenge on her husband Harry and his lover Honey Parker.
The movie poster by Reynold Brown received much criticism since its proportions are not allowed 50 feet look like the giant woman in the picture. It should have been at least 200 feet (80 meters) tall compared to the cars and the people on the poster.
action
Harry Archer wants his wife's $ 50 million inheritance from her father. He wants to leave his wife and spend the money with his young lover Honey Parker. After Nancy catches Harry flirting with Honey in a bar, she encounters a spaceship with a 40-foot alien who needs diamonds to power his spaceship. (The film was produced by Sputnik two months before the start .) Nancy wears one of the largest diamonds, the “Star of India ”. The local sheriff initially scoffs at Nancy's story, but when she pays the fine, it brings him and his deputy a respectable income. Harry sees his wife's alcohol consumption as an opportunity to have her admitted to a psychiatric hospital. The next evening, after Harry has consulted a psychiatrist, he drives Nancy through the desert to look for the alien.
At sunset they find his spaceship. Nancy hits the ship and feels confirmed. Then she suggests euphoria on the ship and wakes its travelers. When Harry finds out that the alien is bulletproof, he escapes, leaving Nancy to her fate. The creature does not intend to hurt Nancy, however, only wants her diamond. However, the creature injured Nancy on the neck when it grasped the diamond, so that she passed out. The creature carries the passed out Nancy home and leaves her on the roof. Her doctor later says that she was obviously exposed to some kind of radiation.
Incited by Honey, Harry plans to give Nancy a lethal dose of a serum to treat her. When Harry approaches her in the dark with her nurse behind her, he discovers that she has grown to enormous size. Nancy's doctor wants to operate on her to stop the growth, but he needs Harry's consent. With the idea that his wife might become disabled, he leaves the house and spends the evening with Honey drowning his sorrows in a bar while he waits for Nancy to die. Meanwhile, doctors sedate and tie up Nancy's gigantic body. When the Archers sheriff and butler follow Nancy's footprints, they discover the alien. When they try to get the diamond back, they are chased away and their car is destroyed. At night, Nancy is too big to be tied up. She breaks free and escapes, ripping off the roof of her own house. Knowing where her husband will be, she is heading for the city. She confronts the deceitful lovers, pulls down the roof of the bar and hurls a beam at Honey, whereupon Honey dies. She takes Harry in her hand and carries him like a doll. When Nancy passes an electrical transformer , the sheriff fires at it. He electrocutes her, as does her husband, whom she only wanted for herself.
Remake and sequels
With a small budget of $ 88,000, the film generated enough sales that a sequel was immediately discussed. According to producer Jaques Marquette, the sequel should be shot with a higher budget and in color. A script was also written, but the project never got beyond the discussion phase.
The film was rematched as a television film by HBO in 1993 .
publication
The film was released on DVD on June 26, 2007. This includes an audio commentary with Yvette Vickers and Tom Weaver. The DVD only contains an English and French soundtrack.
