Anja Senz

Anja-Désirée Senz is a German political scientist and sinologist . Her main focus is on the economy, politics, the environment, social development and the fight against corruption in China and East Asia . In 2014 she was appointed professor for contemporary China research at the Institute for Sinology at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg .

Life

After graduating from high school, Anja Senz studied political science , media sociology and ethnology at the University of Trier . She completed her training as a fellow of the studienstiftung and the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach-Stiftung at the Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou with the study of Chinese language and Chinese history. In her master's thesis written at the University of Trier, Anja Senz dealt with the subject of corruption in Hong Kong .

After completing her studies, she initially continued her research work as a research assistant at the Institute for Political Science at the University of Duisburg-Essen , focusing on the situation of national minorities in China , among other things . She later worked at the same university as a research assistant at the Faculty of Social Sciences and as a research fellow at the Institute for East Asian Studies. Together with Thomas Heberer , she conceived and accompanied the scientific exhibition in Duisburg in 2006, The Yi: yesterday and today - China's people of the great, cool mountains.

In 2010 she presented her doctorate at the Institute for Political Science at the University of Duisburg-Essen on the subject of institutional change and decision-making structures in rural China, for which she won several times - as the best social science dissertation from the University of Duisburg-Essen and the dissertation prize from the Institute for Cultural Studies Essen (research college of the University Alliance Metropole Ruhr) - was awarded.

From 2009 to 2014 she was managing director of the Confucius Institute Metropole Ruhr at the University of Duisburg-Essen. In August 2014, Anja Senz was appointed professor for contemporary China research at the Institute for Sinology at Heidelberg University. In June 2019, the Senate of the Ruprecht-Karls-University elected her as Vice-Rector for Studies and Teaching.

Anja Senz gives regular lectures at home and abroad and publishes monographs , magazine articles and essays in daily newspapers on cultural, economic and trade policy in China and East Asia and was among other things a guest in the Phoenix Roundtable in 2012 as an expert . She regularly does field research in China and other Asian countries.
