Ann Petersen (* 1966 in Sorø , Denmark ) is a Danish opera singer ( soprano ).

Life

Ann Petersen grew up in her hometown Sorø . In 1994 she successfully completed her vocal studies with Susanne Eken at the Det Kongelige Danske Conservatory of Music . In 1999 she graduated from the Opera Academy . She made her operatic debut in 1999 with the leading role in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte , for which she was awarded a Reumert Talent Prize. Since she subsequently found no further engagement, she began looking for work abroad. Until 2004 she was employed as a permanent member of the ensemble at the Graz Opera House . Since then she has been traveling as a freelance singer and has performed at the Royal Opera Covent Garden in London , at the Opéra Bastille in Paris , the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona and the Teatro alla Scala in Milan . She has specialized in the works of Richard Strauss and Richard Wagner .

Directed by Peter Konwitschny , she sang Elsa in Lohengrin at the Det Kongelige Teater. She also played Elsa in Cologne, Mannheim, Bueones Aires and with the conductor Daniel Barenboim at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan . She sang Senta in Wagner's Flying Dutchman several times , including in Turin in 2012, in front of 9,000 spectators on an open-air stage in 2013 in Orange in France and most recently in January at the Kongelige Teater in Copenhagen. She had her first national success when she was awarded the renowned Reumert as Best Singer in 2010 for her portrayal of Ariadne in Strauss Ariadne auf Naxos .

She had her international breakthrough with the part of Isolde in Wagner's Tristan und Isolde at the Lyon Opera . Under the conductor Kirill Petrenko , her interpretation has received national and international recognition. While the German daily Die Welt praised her "glassy, ​​later brightly crystalline soprano", her presentation was recognized as "youthful and fresh" by the British Financial Times . The French daily Le Monde compared her performance with that of Karita Mattila and Waltraud Meier . The following year she repeated her interpretation at Den Jyske Opera in Aarhus , for which she finally received her second Reumert for Best Singer. Her singing was recognized by the expert jury as "great, terrifying, sublime".

She also sang the role of Elisabeth in Wagner's Tannhäuser several times , including in April 2014 at the Berlin State Opera . Daniel Barenboim directed the production by Sasha Waltz , with Petersen on stage at the side of Peter Seiffert and Marina Prudenskaya . The performance was celebrated as a triumph in the Tagesspiegel . In the nmz she was certified as having a “very nice piani”, but also that she doesn’t sound as pleasant in the “Mezzoforte and Forte [...] as in the restrained passages”, and “with the high registers she shines to be simply overwhelmed ”.

Petersen is married to Ole Justesen, the manager of her artist agency Crescendi Artists. The couple has a son.
