Anna Lee Tingle Fisher (born August 24, 1949 in New York City , New York ) is a former American astronaut .
education
Anna Fisher received a bachelor's degree in chemistry in 1971 and a doctorate in medicine in 1976 . In 1987 she earned a master's degree in chemistry. She received all degrees from the University of California, Los Angeles .
Astronaut activity
Fisher was selected as a candidate astronaut by NASA in January 1978. After her training as a mission specialist, she was involved in the development and testing of various space shuttle systems. She worked as a doctor in NASA rescue helicopters and as a liaison officer ( CAPCOM ) for the STS-9 mission .
STS-41-H
This STS-41-H mission was to be carried out on behalf of the US Department of Defense in September 1984 or deploy a TDRS satellite instead. The mission was canceled due to problems with the IUS upper level. Frederick Hauck , David M. Walker , Joseph P. Allen , Anna Fisher and Dale Gardner as well as the payload specialists of the US Air Force, Gary Payton and Frank J. Casserino, were nominated as crew . Daryl J. Joseph was scheduled to be the replacement payload specialist.
STS-51-A
Fisher completed her first space flight aboard the Discovery from November 8 to November 16, 1984. Two satellites were released on the STS-51-A mission and two other satellites were recaptured, the STS-41-B on one exposed to low orbit. To capture the two satellites, two outboard activities were carried out in which Fisher operated the robotic arm .
STS-61-H
The Columbia STS-61-H mission planned for June 1986 was canceled due to the Challenger disaster . A commercial communications satellite should have been suspended. Besides Anna Fisher, the team would have consisted of Michael Coats , John E. Blaha , James Buchli , Robert C. Springer , the British payload specialist Nigel R. Wood and the Indonesian payload specialist Pratiwi Sudarmono .
Honor, time-out and new tasks
The Bavarian town of Hof , from which Fisher's mother originally came from, awarded Fisher the town's Golden Ring of Honor on March 12, 1985 . From 1989 to 1996, Fisher took a break from NASA. After her return, she worked for the International Space Station (ISS) and finally became head of the space station department from 1999. She later went back to work in the shuttle department. Fisher was NASA's longest serving astronaut when he retired in June 2006.
Private
Anna Fisher was married to former astronaut William Fisher and has two daughters with him.
