Anna M. Wobus
Anna Magdalene Wobus b. Knietsch (born December 17, 1945 in Bad Elster ) is a German biologist, known for stem cell research .
Life
Wobus first did an agricultural apprenticeship at an agricultural research institute near Leipzig and at the same time graduated from high school in 1964. She then studied biology and genetics at the University of Greifswald, among others with the geneticist Elisabeth Günther. Then she was at the Institute for Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research in Gatersleben (an institute of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR) and received her doctorate from the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg . In Gatersleben, she worked in a developmental biology research group that was founded in 1978 and used the methods of Beatrice Mintz to study teratoma cells as a model system, and she began researching stem cells there. Since 1992 she has headed her own research group in Gatersleben. In 1997 she completed her habilitation at the medical faculty in Halle.
Wobus developed methods of culturing and differentiating embryonic stem cells. She studied the in vitro differentiation of embryonic stem cells into cells of the heart, pancreas and liver, for example. She also studied toxicological effects using differentiated stem cells.
In 2011 she and her husband received the Cothenius Medal and in 2003 the Science Prize: Society needs science (for work on diabetes and stem cell therapy). She has been a member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities , of the Leopoldina since 2001 and a corresponding member of the North Rhine-Westphalia Academy of Sciences and Arts since 2012 .
She is married to the biologist Ulrich Wobus (* 1942) and has two children. Ulrich Wobus was founding director of what was now the Leibniz Institute in Gatersleben after reunification.
